Over the past 20 years, St. Kitts has targeted the mass US tourist market. With improvements in communications, in particular plans to open up the southern peninsula of St. Kitts Island, the industry should continue to grow. Most visitors come for the beaches, the sun and the Caribbean mood, although in recent years safaris to see local wildlife and mineral springs have operated from isolated hotels in the hills. On St. Kitts, the old Brimstone Hill fortress has been converted into a museum, as has the Nevis birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, one of the architects of the US constitution.
